Health department officials in Mohali, Punjab, launched an investigation into a momo and spring roll processing unit after a severed dog’s head was found in a fridge during a raid. The raid was part of a larger effort by the district health department and municipal corporation to inspect food units operating in unhygienic conditions.
The factory, located in Mataur village, had come under scrutiny after a video showed poor sanitation. During the inspection, officials discovered the severed head of a dog, believed to be a pug, in the fridge. Authorities clarified that the dog was not used in food production, but was allegedly kept by workers from Nepal. The factory had been supplying over 100 kg of momos and spring rolls daily to Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Kalka for the past two years.
In addition to the disturbing find, officials also collected samples of spoiled meat and food, including momos, spring rolls, and sauces. The dog’s head has been sent to the Veterinary Department for testing to determine if it was used in the food.
The Mohali municipal corporation fined the factory owner ₹22,000—₹12,000 for illegal slaughtering and ₹10,000 for improper storage using plastic bags. The authorities also plan to investigate whether the factory has the proper licenses to operate in the area. The focus remains on ensuring public health and food safety.
