In a move to strengthen parental and community involvement in government schools, the Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has approved amendments to the Punjab Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2011.
The decision, taken during a Cabinet meeting at the Punjab Civil Secretariat, aims to enhance the role of parents and experts in School Management Committees (SMCs). The amendment increases the number of SMC members from 12 to 16, including 12 parent representatives and four members from fields such as education, sports, and extracurricular activities. This restructuring is expected to improve academic oversight and holistic development in government schools across the state.
Prison Transfer Reforms Approved
The Cabinet also approved amendments to the Transfer of Prisoners Act, 1950, facilitating the transfer of under-trial prisoners between states. This process will require mutual consent between the states involved and approval from the trial court. The reform is intended to help decongest Punjab’s prisons by relocating under-trial inmates to other states where necessary.
New Rules for Social Security Department
In another significant decision, the Cabinet approved the creation of new service rules for Group A officers in the Social Security, Women, and Child Development Department. The move aims to streamline departmental operations and enhance services for underprivileged communities.
Appointments in Heritage and Tourism Boards
Additionally, the Cabinet sanctioned the terms and conditions for appointing the Chairman and Members of the Punjab Tirath Yatra Samiti, as well as the Advisor to the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board.
These decisions reflect the government’s commitment to improving education, social security, and judicial administration across the state.
