Ahead of inaugurating several key development projects in Delhi on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that it would be a significant day for the city’s progress. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “Today is an important day for Delhi’s development. I will be inaugurating and laying the foundation stones for various development works in Ashok Vihar, which will enhance the ‘Ease of Living’ for the people of Delhi.”
Among the projects to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister are 1,675 newly constructed flats for residents of JJ (Jhuggi Jhopri) clusters in Ashok Vihar, the World Trade Centre (WTC) at Nauroji Nagar, General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Type-II Quarters at Sarojini Nagar, and the Integrated Office Complex for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) at Dwarka.
Additionally, PM Modi will lay the foundation stones for three major projects at Delhi University, worth ₹600 crore. These projects include the Eastern Campus at Surajmal Vihar, the Western Campus at Dwarka, and the Veer Savarkar College at Roshanpura, Najafgarh, all of which will feature state-of-the-art facilities. The naming of the college after Veer Savarkar, a prominent right-wing ideologue, has sparked a political controversy. The Congress party has accused the BJP of “glorifying individuals who had submitted mercy petitions to the British,” referring to Savarkar’s actions during British colonial rule.
In response, the BJP, whose ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is a right-wing organization, has criticized Congress for “disrespecting great personalities.” The ongoing dispute has been further fueled by the involvement of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU), which is currently led by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), a student wing affiliated with the Congress party.
