Prithvi Shaw Makes Comeback With Historic Record In Ranji Trophy

Prithvi Shaw scored a century in his second innings for Mumbai to take the lead against Chhattisgarh in their Ranji Trophy Group B match on Friday in Raipur, capping an incredible comeback to competitive cricket. In his 159 off 185 deliveries, the 24-year-old, who captained the team that won the 2018 U-19 World Cup, hit 18 boundaries and three sixes.

Before lunch, the opener reached the three-figure mark, becoming the first Indian player to score two centuries in the first session of a first-class cricket match.

He had accomplished a similar feat against Assam on his way to the second-highest Ranji Trophy score ever, 383 off 383 balls.

Shaw returned to competitive cricket in Mumbai’s Ranji match against Bengal at Eden Gardens, following a six-month injury layoff. In a match that Mumbai won by an innings and four runs, he scored 35 when he came back.

It was his first time playing since he represented Northants in the English County Championship on August 13 of last year. He played his last match for India in July of 2021.

Shaw had sustained a knee injury in August; he had surgery in London and recovered over the course of three months. Following a fitness test, the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru has cleared him.

In his previous Ranji Trophy season, he scored 595 runs in 10 innings, which was a great accomplishment. However, with just 106 runs in eight innings during his appalling IPL season, he lost his position in Delhi Capitals XI.
