Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his profound disappointment on Wednesday following the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics. Describing Phogat as a “champion among champions,” Modi emphasized that despite the setback, the entire nation supports her and believes in her resilience to overcome challenges.
In a heartfelt message posted on X, Modi expressed, “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India’s pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today’s setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomize resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head-on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you.”
Phogat had stunned the world by defeating the top-ranked and defending champion Yui Susaki in the 50-kg freestyle event, securing India’s first silver medal in women’s wrestling on Tuesday (August 6). With the nation’s hopes riding on her for a historic gold medal, Phogat’s journey was abruptly halted when she was found to be 100 grams over the required weight for her category, leading to her disqualification.
