President Droupadi Murmu Denounces Emergency as a ‘Dark Period for Democracy’

In a significant address to the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, President Droupadi Murmu condemned the Emergency imposed in 1975 by the Indira Gandhi government, calling it an unconstitutional and dark period for Indian democracy.

“The Emergency was a big attack on the constitution,” President Murmu stated, emphasizing its impact on democratic values. Her remarks were met with vocal protests from opposition members, highlighting the ongoing political divide over the legacy of the Emergency.

This statement comes amidst a heated political discourse, with the ruling BJP-led NDA repeatedly spotlighting the Emergency’s horrors, while Congress and its allies argue that an “undeclared emergency” has prevailed during the past decade of Narendra Modi’s government.

Despite the contentious atmosphere, President Murmu expressed optimism about the newly formed government, which she described as a stable administration with a complete majority, formed for the first time in six decades. She assured the nation that significant economic and social decisions, as well as historical steps, would be unveiled during the upcoming Union Budget sessions.

“A stable government with a complete majority has been formed in the country after six decades. People have shown trust in this Government for the third time. People are aware that only this Government can fulfil their aspirations. The 18th Lok Sabha is historic in many ways. This Lok Sabha was formed in the early years of the Amrit Kaal. This Lok Sabha will also be a witness to the 56th year of adoption of the Constitution of the country,” President Murmu stated.
