PM Modi Writes to Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus, Highlights ‘Mutual Sensitivity’ and Liberation War Spirit

Amid rising tensions between India and Bangladesh over alleged atrocities against religious minorities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, extending his wishes on the country’s National Day. In his letter, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, emphasizing the importance of “mutual sensitivity to each other’s concerns.”

The Prime Minister acknowledged the deep historical ties between the two nations, stating that the spirit of Bangladesh’s Liberation War has been instrumental in shaping their relationship. “Excellency, I extend my felicitations to you and the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of the National Day of Bangladesh, a testament to our shared history and sacrifices that have built our bilateral partnership. The spirit of the Liberation War continues to guide our flourishing relationship across multiple domains, bringing tangible benefits to our peoples,” PM Modi wrote.

He further reiterated India’s dedication to fostering peace, stability, and prosperity in the region through close cooperation with Bangladesh.

Both PM Modi and Muhammad Yunus are expected to participate in the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok on April 3-4.

Tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka have escalated following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government after a nationwide movement. Hasina has since sought refuge in India, while Nobel laureate and economist Muhammad Yunus now heads the interim administration.

Reports of violence against minorities, particularly Hindus, have further strained relations. While India has repeatedly conveyed its concerns, Bangladesh maintains that the unrest is politically driven rather than communal.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has assured that India remains in constant dialogue with the interim government and will continue addressing these issues diplomatically.
