Opposition BJP Clamors for Standing Committee Amid Chaos in MCD House

A tumultuous scene unfolded in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House on Monday as opposition members vociferously demanded the establishment of a Standing Committee. The proceedings witnessed an uproar within ten minutes of the meeting’s commencement, with BJP councillors taking center stage, brandishing banners that emphatically read ‘Sthayi Samiti Gathan Karo’ (Set up a Standing Committee) while raising slogans.

The BJP, in a bold accusation, contended that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was fully aware of its inability to secure a majority in the upcoming MCD’s Standing Committee poll. The party alleged that many of its own councillors would not support the AAP in the vote.

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi took an extraordinary step by moving the Supreme Court, seeking a directive to permit the MCD to exercise the functions of the Standing Committee until its formal constitution. In a previous session, Mayor Oberoi had proposed transferring the powers of the Standing Committee to the House itself. However, this proposition was met with strong opposition from BJP councillors who deemed it “illegal and unconstitutional.”

The plea filed by Mayor Oberoi, with the lieutenant governor’s office as a respondent, specifically seeks a court directive for the seamless functioning of the civic body. The discord within the MCD House reflects the political tensions surrounding the formation of the Standing Committee, adding another layer of complexity to the already charged atmosphere.
