Members of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of Congress, stormed the office of the National Testing Agency (NTA) in Delhi’s Okhla amid the ongoing NEET and UGC-NET controversy. According to a PTI report, NSUI activists barged into the NTA office, chanting slogans such as “shut down NTA.” A video shared by NSUI shows numerous members protesting inside the NTA building.
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET-UG was conducted by the NTA on May 5, with around 24 lakh candidates participating. The results were announced on June 4, but allegations of question paper leaks in states like Bihar and other irregularities soon followed.
NSUI’s protest coincided with President Droupadi Murmu’s assertion that the Narendra Modi-led NDA government is committed to a fair investigation into the recent paper leak incidents. In her address to a joint session of parliament, the President emphasized the importance of transparency and integrity in competitive examinations and government recruitment processes.
“Whether it is competitive examinations or government recruitment, there should be no reason for any hindrance. This process requires complete transparency and probity. Regarding the recent instances of paper leak in some examinations, my government is committed to a fair investigation and ensuring strict punishment to the culprits,” President Murmu stated.
The NTA has faced significant criticism over the alleged irregularities and cancellations of competitive exams. Last week, the government replaced NTA Director General Subodh Kumar Singh with Pradeep Singh Kharola. Additionally, a seven-member panel led by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief K. Radhakrishnan has been established to review exam reforms and the NTA’s functioning.
As part of precautionary measures, the government also canceled two other exams, the CSIR-UGC NET and NEET PG, last week.
