On Saturday, Australian police announced that they had received reports of “multiple people” being stabbed at a busy Sydney shopping center.
The events took place at the expansive Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center, which was crowded with people on a Saturday afternoon.
Police have asked people to stay away from the area and have locked down the mall.
According to New South Wales Ambulance, a man was fatally shot by a police officer. He’s thought to be one of the assailants.
It wasn’t immediately apparent why.
Witnesses reported that there was a panicked scene, with police attempting to secure the area and shoppers rushing to safety.
A supermarket provided refuge for a number of people, who stayed there for approximately an hour.
The air was filled with the sound of helicopters and police sirens.
Security camera footage broadcast by local media showed a man running around the shopping centre with a large knife.
