More Than 3 Dozen Indian Americans Running For State And Local Bodies In US

More than three dozen Indian Americans are running for various state legislatures and local bodies across the United States, signaling a growing political presence for the community. This surge in candidacies reflects the increasing involvement of Indian Americans in U.S. politics, as they seek to make their voices heard on issues ranging from education to healthcare and economic policy.

Indian Americans, now one of the fastest-growing and most influential immigrant groups in the U.S., are finding more opportunities to serve in local and state governments. Many of these candidates are running for positions in city councils, school boards, and state legislatures, aiming to represent the diverse needs of their communities. In some cases, candidates are entering politics for the first time, motivated by a desire to address concerns specific to immigrant populations, while others bring years of experience from community service or other public roles.

California is home to the largest number of Indian Americans running for local offices, with many aiming to make an impact at the state and local levels. The state, which boasts the largest Indian American population in the U.S. — nearly 900,000 strong — is already represented in Congress by two prominent Indian American lawmakers: Ro Khanna and Dr. Ami Bera. Additionally, Vice President Kamala Harris, whose mother was of Indian descent, further highlights the growing influence of the community.

Among the candidates in California are Adlah Chisti, who is running for County Supervisor for District 11, and Aliya Chisti, who is seeking a seat on the San Francisco City College Board. Darshana Patel is vying for a spot in the State Assembly, while Nicole Fernandez is running for San Mateo City Council. Nithya Raman is seeking re-election to the Los Angeles City Council, Richa Awasthi is contesting a seat on the Foster City Council, and Sukhdeep Kaur is running for a position on the Emeryville City Council.

Tara Sreekrishnan is also making a bid for California’s State Assembly, representing District 26 in Silicon Valley, one of the state’s most influential tech hubs.
