Minor’s Gang-Rape In Assam: Main Accused Escapes Police Custody, Jumps Into Water, Dies

In Assam’s Dhing, a tragic turn of events unfolded involving the gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl. The prime suspect, Tafazul Islam, died after reportedly escaping from police custody and jumping into a pond during a crime scene re-creation early Saturday. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m., shortly after Islam was brought to the location where the crime allegedly took place.

The gang-rape occurred on Thursday evening when the girl was returning home from her tuition class. She was assaulted by three men and left injured and unconscious by the side of the road near a pond. Local residents found her and alerted the police.

Following his arrest on Friday, Tafazul Islam was taken to the crime scene by the police for a re-enactment of the events. However, he managed to flee, jumping into the pond with his hands still cuffed. A search operation ensued, and his body was recovered after approximately two hours.

As of now, one person has been arrested, another is in detention, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the third suspect. Assam’s Director General of Police, GP Singh, reviewed the investigation’s progress and visited the scene. He also met with the victim’s family.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the need for swift and decisive action against such crimes. He asserted that prompt action is essential in cases of violence against women and stressed that public confidence in government actions is crucial. Sarma also pointed out that visible, aggressive action is necessary to address public anger and ensure justice.

In his statement, Sarma noted that the perpetrators involved in this case, which involves a Hindu minor, will face appropriate punishment.
