Maheep Kapoor captured the public’s attention with her fearless attitude and unique personality when she first appeared on Netflix’s Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives in 2020. Married to actor Sanjay Kapoor, the younger brother of Anil Kapoor and Boney Kapoor, Maheep is also the aunt of actors Arjun Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, and Khushi Kapoor. While the show spotlighted her lifestyle, work, and passions over three seasons, little was known about her love story with Sanjay Kapoor until recently.
Maheep Kapoor opened up about their unconventional start during her appearance on Raunaq Rajani’s YouTube show. She revealed, “Ours was quite simple. I just had a one-night stand with this man, and I never knew I was going to marry him. I gatecrashed his party, that’s where I met him, dead drunk.”
Recalling her early interactions with Sanjay’s family, Maheep shared, “I met the whole family, mother-in-law, father-in-law… you guys know my family, right? Anil (Kapoor), Sunita, Sri(devi). And I was dead drunk, but they still accepted me and said, ‘Wow, what an amazing future daughter-in-law.’ They welcomed me with open arms.”
Their journey to marriage didn’t include a formal proposal. “We didn’t have all this proposal and all. I am much older than you. We didn’t have Instagram. So, we didn’t give a shit. He just told me, ‘Look, we are getting married,’” Maheep said. In response to Raunaq Rajani’s playful remark, “He just told you? You haven’t said no to him till now?” Maheep quipped, “No. I wish he asked me again. Maybe I’d say, ‘No. Are you crazy? I am not doing this again.’”
The conversation took a humorous turn as they reflected on the norms of the 1990s. “But that didn’t exist in the 90s, right? Consent. Especially, when it was with Bollywood,” Rajani joked. Maheep clarified, “We dated for five years. So, it’s been 30 years I have been with this man.” She recounted the moment Sanjay asked her to marry him: “We were in 1900s, a nightclub in Colaba Taj. We were drunk. We were partying. He said, ‘Okay, we are getting married.’ So I said, ‘Okay, fine,’ in between my tequila shots. That was it. We didn’t do this proposing, getting down on our knees for Instagram, speech.”
When asked if they still cuddle after 30 years of marriage, Maheep responded, “Are you crazy? We have been married for 30 years, cuddling doesn’t exist. You simply go to sleep.”
Maheep and Sanjay Kapoor tied the knot in 1997 and share two children, daughter Shanaya Kapoor and son Jahaan Kapoor.
