A semi-nude body of a woman doctor was discovered under mysterious circumstances on the third floor of the emergency building at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on Friday morning. The victim, a second-year postgraduate student, was found dead in the Seminar Hall, where she had been resting after her night shift. Her death has triggered widespread outrage among the medical community and political circles.
On Saturday, police arrested a suspect, Sanjay Roy, in connection with the case. The initial autopsy report indicates that the doctor was sexually assaulted before being murdered, ruling out any possibility of suicide. The report details severe injuries, including a broken neck bone and signs of strangulation, as well as bleeding from her private parts, face, and eyes.
The horrific incident has led to a massive outcry from the medical fraternity. Students and junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College organized a candlelight march in protest, demanding better security measures in the hospital. The protesting doctors have refused to work in all departments except for the emergency ward, citing a lack of safety. Additionally, several student associations held rallies calling for a swift investigation into the death.
The opposition BJP has seized on the incident, demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and a re-postmortem by a Central Government hospital. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul alleged that the state authorities were attempting to cover up the crime, and accused the Kolkata Police of being complicit in showing the incident as a suicide. Amit Malviya, another BJP leader, echoed these sentiments, accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led government of hiding the truth.
In response, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sougata Roy assured that the investigation would be conducted transparently and that those responsible would be held accountable. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also reached out to the victim’s family, promising justice.
The Kolkata Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), including members of the homicide department, to investigate the case. The hospital administration has also set up an 11-member inquiry committee to look into the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, the victim’s family continues to allege that she was raped and murdered, accusing authorities of attempting to suppress the truth. The case has sparked widespread anger and demands for justice, with nurses in Kolkata also rallying in solidarity with the victim.
