Kerala Police Launch Probe into Shocking Sexual Abuse Case Involving 18-Year-Old Athlete

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves across Kerala, the Pathanamthitta district police have launched an investigation against more than 60 men accused of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old athlete over a span of five years. The accused include the girl’s coaches, fellow sportspersons, and neighbors.

The case came to light after the survivor informed the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Pathanamthitta about the repeated assaults she endured. Acting on her complaint, the committee alerted the police, prompting swift action. On Friday, police registered four First Information Reports (FIRs) and arrested five men, identified as Subin, S Sandeep, VK Vineeth, K Anandu, and Srini.

According to the survivor’s statement, the abuse began when she was just 13 years old. The ordeal started when a neighbor allegedly forced her to watch pornographic videos and subsequently abused her. The neighbor, along with his friends, continued to exploit the girl, taking her to an isolated hill near her house to carry out the assaults.

Pathanamthitta District Police Chief VG Vinodkumar has formed a special investigation team to handle the case, given the severity and complexity of the allegations. Preliminary investigations have identified at least 62 potential perpetrators, and cases have been registered against 40 men under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The Elavumthitta Police Station initially registered the case, but due to the large number of accused, officers from other police stations will assist in the investigation. The police have assured that the case will be pursued with utmost diligence to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Child Welfare Committee has prioritized the survivor’s safety and well-being. She has been moved to a shelter home, and arrangements for her emotional support and counselling have been made. CWC member Adv. Syamala Devi confirmed that more people might be implicated as the investigation progresses.

“We are currently gathering details. The girl has been shifted to a shelter home. Further information will be revealed tomorrow (Saturday, 11 January),” Syamala Devi told South First.

A Child Protection Officer is scheduled to speak with the victim on January 11 to gather more evidence and provide further support. The victim’s statement is expected to play a crucial role in the investigation and prosecution of the accused.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for stringent measures to ensure the safety of young athletes. Authorities have vowed to leave no stone unturned in ensuring justice for the survivor and addressing systemic issues that may have contributed to the prolonged abuse.
