Kerala CM Challenges Sangh Parivar: Will They Drop ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ Coined by a Muslim?

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has emphasized the significant contributions of Muslims to India’s history and independence movement, challenging the Sangh Parivar’s appropriation of nationalist slogans.

In a recent address, Vijayan highlighted that slogans like ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Jai Hind’ were first raised by Muslims, questioning whether the Sangh Parivar would abandon them. He cited examples such as Azimullah Khan, who coined ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai,’ and diplomat Abid Hasan, who first raised ‘Jai Hind.’

The Chief Minister underscored the historical role of Muslims in India’s freedom struggle, including contributions by cultural icons and officials. He mentioned the Persian translations of Upanishads by Dara Shikoh, son of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan, as a testament to cultural exchange.

Vijayan criticized the RSS-led BJP government for its Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), alleging its aim to marginalize Muslims. He accused the Centre of attempting to make citizenship illegal for Muslim refugees while claiming to assist refugees from neighboring countries.

The Chief Minister condemned the Congress party for its lack of sincerity in anti-CAA protests, citing their absence during demonstrations and participation in party events during protests. He accused the Centre of tacitly supporting violence against anti-CAA protestors and likened RSS ideology to Hitler’s fascism.

Vijayan’s remarks come amid ongoing protests against the CAA across the country, with the Left government in Kerala registering strong opposition. Despite political differences, Vijayan called for unity in resisting what he perceives as discriminatory policies.

The Chief Minister’s speech reflects the broader discourse surrounding nationalism, religious identity, and political dissent in India, underscoring the complex socio-political landscape of the country.
