Kasparov’s Witty Response to Congress’s Claims about Rahul Gandhi’s Political and Chess Prowess

Renowned Russian chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov has delivered a clever retort to Congress’s assertions regarding Rahul Gandhi’s political and chess acumen. In a post on social media platform X, Kasparov quipped, “Tradition dictates that you should first win from Raebareli before challenging for the top!”

Kasparov’s remark was prompted by Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh’s praise of Rahul Gandhi as both an experienced politician and chess player. Ramesh defended Gandhi’s candidacy from Raebareli amidst criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the decision to field him from there instead of Amethi.

The banter on social media ensued following a post suggesting relief that Kasparov and fellow chess grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand retired early and thus avoided facing “the greatest chess genius of our times.”

Kasparov’s witty response adds a layer of humor to the political discourse surrounding Rahul Gandhi’s electoral choices and Congress’s strategy. It also draws attention to the significance of Raebareli, a seat steeped in political history and dynastic legacies.

The mention of Raebareli’s electoral significance harks back to its historical connection with the Gandhi family, starting from Feroze Gandhi’s contest in 1952, and later upheld by Indira and Sonia Gandhi. Sonia’s decision not to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Raebareli marks a symbolic transition in the family’s political saga.

Meanwhile, the chess world has witnessed a new milestone with 17-year-old D Gukesh becoming the youngest-ever challenger to the world title after winning the 2024 Candidates Tournament in Canada, surpassing Kasparov’s record set in 1984.
