Jasprit Bumrah has been officially ruled out of India’s squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury, the BCCI confirmed late on Tuesday night. After much anticipation over his fitness following the injury, it has been confirmed that India’s pace spearhead will miss the tournament. Harshit Rana, the 23-year-old pacer, has been named as Bumrah’s replacement in the final 15-man squad.

In another significant change, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been dropped from the final squad, with 33-year-old mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy taking his place. The BCCI released a statement, which said: “Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement. Team India have also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. Chakaravarthy will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was initially named in the provisional squad.”

Bumrah had sustained the back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and was advised to rest for five weeks, as confirmed by chief selector Ajit Agarkar. However, the 31-year-old seamer has not been able to recover in time for the tournament.

Harshit Rana made his ODI debut during the series against England, where he took four wickets in two matches.

Another key change sees Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was India’s top run-scorer across all formats in 2024, being omitted from the final squad. Although Jaiswal has primarily excelled in Test cricket, he has only played one ODI. Meanwhile, Varun Chakaravarthy, who made his ODI debut alongside Jaiswal during the England series, earned his spot in the squad after an outstanding T20I performance, where he claimed 14 wickets in five games and was named ‘Player of the Series’.
