The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has announced that there is no evidence to support claims of gang rape in the case of the Kolkata doctor who died in August. According to the CBI, the evidence suggests that only Sanjay Roy, who has been arrested by the police, was involved in the rape and murder of the victim at RG Kar Hospital. The investigation is nearing its conclusion, and the agency, which was appointed by the Kolkata High Court despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s objections, will soon file charges.
The CBI faces pressure from Chief Minister Banerjee, who is also under scrutiny from political adversaries and civil society groups regarding the brutal crime. Last week, Banerjee criticized the delay in the investigation. “I asked for five days for the police to investigate before involving the federal agency, but the case was immediately handed over to the CBI. They seem more interested in delaying justice than delivering it. It has been 16 days; where is the justice?” she questioned in Kolkata.
Additionally, state Minister Bratya Basu has demanded an update on the investigation. “Twenty-three days have passed since the case was transferred to the CBI, yet there has been no progress report. We expect a detailed report on the investigation. During the Kolkata Police’s inquiry, regular updates were provided through press conferences,” he stated.
The CBI is expected to finalize the inquiry once it receives the doctors’ final opinions on the evidence. The agency has conducted nearly 100 interviews and performed 10 polygraph tests, including two on former hospital chief Dr. Sandip Ghosh. So far, the CBI has found no reason to believe that anyone else was involved in the crime.
The CBI has made three arrests, the most significant being Dr. Ghosh, who resigned from his position days after the incident on “moral grounds” but was appointed to lead another state-run hospital shortly thereafter.
