Israeli Lawyer Amit Soussana Speaks Out About Sexual Abuse Endured During Hamas Captivity

In a harrowing account detailed to The New York Times, Amit Soussana, a 40-year-old lawyer from Israel, has become the first Israeli hostage to publicly disclose the sexual abuse she endured while being held captive by Hamas militants. Soussana’s testimony sheds light on the horrific treatment faced by hostages held by the Palestinian militant group.

According to Soussana, her ordeal began shortly after being taken captive by Hamas during attacks on October 7. Videos circulating on social media depict Hamas gunmen violently subduing Soussana as she attempted to flee during the assault near Kibbutz Kfar Azza, located close to the Gaza border.

During her captivity, Soussana recounted being repeatedly assaulted by a man she identified as ‘Muhammad.’ She described instances where ‘Muhammad’ subjected her to sexual abuse, including groping and coercing her into performing sexual acts at gunpoint. Soussana also revealed that ‘Muhammad’ showed a disturbing interest in her personal life, frequently inquiring about her menstrual cycle and making inappropriate advances.

The abuse didn’t cease with ‘Muhammad.’ Soussana alleges that she was subjected to further violence by multiple guards at various locations, including Hamas tunnels, where she sustained severe injuries, including fractures and bruising.

Despite her traumatic experiences, Soussana’s bravery in speaking out has brought attention to the plight of hostages still held by Hamas. Approximately 130 hostages remain in captivity, with negotiations for their release ongoing.

Hamas has attempted to cast doubt on Soussana’s account, with spokesman Basem Naim challenging the credibility of her story. However, a recent United Nations report corroborates claims of sexual violence against hostages.
