India’s Potential New Bowling Coach: BCCI Evaluates Morne Morkel on Gambhir’s Advice

Former South African cricketer Morne Morkel is reportedly being considered to replace Paras Mhambrey as the bowling coach for the Indian men’s cricket team. This development comes after Gautam Gambhir, recently appointed as the head coach of the Indian team, suggested Morkel’s name to the BCCI.

Morkel, who retired from international cricket in 2018, has a decorated career with South Africa, having taken 544 wickets across formats. He previously worked with Gambhir at Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants, achieving playoff berths in the latter.

Following Gambhir’s move to KKR as a mentor for IPL 2024, Morkel continued with Lucknow Super Giants under new head coach Justin Langer. Gambhir’s influence also extends to suggesting coaching staff additions like Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, both from KKR, to join the Indian team setup.

The BCCI is reportedly considering other candidates including Zaheer Khan, R Vinay Kumar, and Lakshmipathy Balaji for the role. Gambhir’s first assignment as head coach will be the upcoming white-ball series in Sri Lanka, comprising three ODIs and three T20Is starting later this month.
