India to Deliver BrahMos Supersonic Missiles to Philippines

In a significant development amid escalating tensions in the South China Sea, the Philippines is poised to receive its first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India. The delivery, part of a USD 375 million deal inked between the two nations in 2022, underscores India’s commitment to bolstering the Philippines’ defense capabilities.

Defense sources have revealed that the Indian Air Force is utilizing its fleet of American-made C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft to ferry the missile systems to the Philippines Marine Corps. Additionally, cargo vessels have been enlisted to transport these crucial systems via sea routes.

The export of ground systems for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, alongside the missiles themselves, commenced last month, as reported by the news agency ANI. The Philippines plans to strategically deploy three batteries of the BrahMos missile system along its coastal areas, aiming to fortify its defenses against potential threats in the region, particularly from China.

This deal, which has received multiple approvals from partner nations in the program, highlights the success of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile program, a joint venture between India’s DRDRO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya. Regarded as one of the most successful missile programs globally, the BrahMos missile system has significantly enhanced India’s deterrence capabilities.

The Indian Army has already integrated multiple BrahMos regiments into its arsenal since 2007, further solidifying its position as a formidable force in the region.
