India Holds Agni-5 Missile Test With MIRV Technology

India successfully conducted the first flight test of Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRV) with the Agni-5 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile.  The successful test was verified by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Interestinlgy, the Chinese vessel, Xian Yang Hong 01, is currently located 480 km or less than 260 nautical miles, off the coast of Visakhapatnam. India bases its three nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines there, which are among the country’s most sensitive weaponry.

Mission Divyastra is a revolutionary weapons system that was developed in the country and has the potential to drastically alter Southeast Asia’s geopolitical and strategic landscape. Today marked the first flight of the DRDO-developed Agni-5 MIRV missile, which was being develpped for more than ten years.
Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, which guarantees that a single missile can deploy multiple nuclear warheads and hit targets at different locations simultaneously, is a feature of the new weapon system of the Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO).

Only a few countries currently possess the technology, and with India’s test, it has joined the exclusive group, according to official sources. Countries including the US, UK, Russia, France, and China have developed MIRVs.

Agni-5 missile has been tested earlier, but only with a single warhead.
