Imane Khelif Files Cyberbullying Complaint Against JK Rowling, Elon Musk Over Olympics Gender Dispute

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who made history by winning gold in the women’s welterweight division at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has filed a legal complaint in France over a campaign of online harassment. The complaint, submitted by her lawyer, Nabil Boudi, to a specialized unit in the Paris prosecutor’s office, alleges that Khelif has been the target of aggravated cyber-harassment, described as a “misogynist, racist, and sexist campaign.”

Khelif’s victory, which marked Algeria’s first gold medal in boxing by a woman at the Olympic Games, was marred by controversy following allegations about her gender. The International Boxing Association (IBA) disqualified the 25-year-old from the women’s World Championships after she allegedly failed a gender eligibility test. However, the IBA, which has been expelled by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to financial and corruption issues, has not provided evidence for its claims. The IOC cleared Khelif to compete in the Olympics.

Boudi’s complaint names high-profile individuals such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Harry Potter author JK Rowling, and former U.S. President Donald Trump as part of the prosecution. The lawsuit alleges that these figures contributed to the online harassment Khelif faced, with Rowling referring to Khelif as a “male” on Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), and Musk endorsing a post opposing men competing in women’s sports. Trump also supported this stance on his Truth Social platform.

Khelif’s lawyer emphasized that while specific names are mentioned, the prosecution is requested to investigate anyone involved in the campaign against Khelif. The case could go to court, where those involved may face trial. The controversy around Khelif intensified when her Italian opponent, Angela Carini, withdrew from their bout, claiming it was unfair and describing Khelif’s punches as the hardest she had ever experienced. Despite the backlash, Khelif expressed pride in her victory, calling it a message of “dignity and honor” to the IBA. She rejected the doubts about her gender, labeling those who questioned it as “enemies of success.”
