ICMR: Avoid tea, coffee before and after meals

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has cautioned against excessive consumption of tea and coffee, which are deeply ingrained in Indian culture as beloved beverages. Recently, in collaboration with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), the medical body introduced 17 new dietary guidelines aimed at promoting healthier eating habits nationwide. These guidelines emphasize the importance of maintaining a diverse diet and staying physically active.

While acknowledging the cultural significance of tea and coffee, medical experts have highlighted potential health risks associated with their overconsumption. According to ICMR researchers, tea and coffee contain caffeine, a compound that stimulates the central nervous system and can lead to physiological dependence. The guidelines also provide insights into the caffeine content of various beverages, noting that a 150ml cup of brewed coffee typically contains 80 – 120 mg of caffeine, while instant coffee contains 50 – 65mg, and tea contains 30 – 65mg.

ICMR recommends a daily caffeine intake limit of 300mg and advises against consuming tea or coffee at least an hour before and after meals. This caution is due to the presence of tannins in these beverages, which can hinder iron absorption in the body. Tannins bind to iron in the stomach, potentially causing iron deficiency and related health issues like anaemia. Excessive coffee consumption may also contribute to high blood pressure and cardiac irregularities.

However, the guidelines note that drinking tea without milk offers various health benefits, including improved blood circulation and a reduced risk of conditions such as coronary artery disease and stomach cancer. Additionally, the recommendations advocate for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and seafood, while advising moderation in the intake of oil, sugar, and salt.
