“I Take My Words Back”: Kangana Retracts Statement on Farm Laws After Facing Massive Backlash

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut, who recently sparked controversy by advocating for the return of the now-repealed farm laws, has retracted her remarks and expressed regret. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), the actor-turned-politician apologized for her comments and acknowledged that her words had hurt many.

“The media questioned me on the farm laws, and I suggested that the farmers should appeal to the Prime Minister to bring back the laws. However, my remarks have disappointed many,” Kangana said in her video. She added, “I should now keep note of the fact that I am no longer just an actor but an MP for the BJP, and my opinions should reflect the party’s stance, not personal views. I regret hurting people’s sentiments and take my words back.”

Kangana also captioned the video, stating, “I stand with my party regarding the farmers’ laws. Jai Hind.”

The controversy erupted after the Congress shared an undated video of Ranaut on X, in which she was heard suggesting that the repealed farm laws be reinstated, stating, “Farmers should themselves demand this [the return of the farm laws] so that there is no hindrance to their prosperity.” The Congress used her remarks to accuse the BJP of planning to reintroduce the contentious laws, which were withdrawn in 2021 after year-long protests by farmers.

The BJP quickly distanced itself from Kangana’s comments. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia released a statement saying, “Kangana Ranaut’s remarks are her personal views. She is not authorized to make such statements on behalf of the BJP, and they do not reflect the party’s stance on the farm bills. We disapprove of her comments.”

Kangana’s comments also drew criticism from Opposition parties. Congress accused the ruling party of covertly seeking to reintroduce the farm laws, while Janata Dal (United) leader KC Tyagi called for action against Kangana and urged the BJP to address the matter internally.

This is not the first time Kangana has found herself at odds with her party’s official stance. In 2021, she made controversial comments during the farmers’ protests, accusing protestors of engaging in “violence,” “rapes,” and “murders,” remarks which led to legal action being taken against her. A case was filed by a Bharatiya Kisan Union functionary, and Kangana is set to appear in court on October 25 regarding those statements.

The three controversial farm laws, introduced in June 2020, included the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act. The laws were repealed in November 2021 following widespread protests by farmers.
