In a significant counter-terrorism operation, two terrorists, including a prominent Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) commander, were killed in a fierce encounter in the Madergam area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Sunday.
A senior police officer, in an exclusive conversation with the Srinagar-based news agency Kashmir Scroll, confirmed the operation’s details. The officer explained that on Saturday afternoon, following credible intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists, a joint team of security forces comprising the Indian Army, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a meticulously planned cordon and search operation in the Madergam area.
As the security forces closed in on the suspected location, the hiding terrorists opened fire, prompting the forces to retaliate. This exchange of gunfire triggered a prolonged and intense gunfight. The encounter resulted in the elimination of two terrorists, both identified as residents of Shopian district.
One of the slain terrorists was identified as Aadil Hussain Wani, a high-ranking commander of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, hailing from Kutipora in Shopian. Aadil was a key figure in the militant outfit and was involved in several high-profile attacks and recruitment drives in the region. The second terrorist was identified as Faisal Bashir Lone, a resident of Kanipora in Shopian. Faisal, too, had a significant role within the terrorist organization and was known for his involvement in various terror-related activities.
The successful operation underscores the persistent efforts of the security forces to curb terrorism and maintain peace and stability in the Kashmir Valley. The encounter, however, is not entirely concluded, as security forces continue to conduct search operations in the area to ensure that no other militants are hiding and to gather any additional intelligence or evidence.
The elimination of these two terrorists, particularly the HM commander, is considered a substantial blow to the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen’s operations in the region. It also serves as a stern message to terrorist groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir that the security forces are vigilant and capable of responding effectively to any threat.
The local population has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities, as the security forces continue their efforts to ensure the safety and security of the region. The state administration, along with security agencies, remains committed to restoring peace and normalcy in the valley, despite the ongoing challenges posed by militant activities.
