Arshdeep Singh is better than Harshit Rana for now. That’s what Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting has backed Arshdeep Singh over Harshit Rana for India’s Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh, a crucial match where India will try to fill the gap left by the injured Jasprit Bumrah. While Rana has shown promise in his recent opportunities, Ponting believes the left-arm pacer Arshdeep is better suited for all phases of the 50-over game.
Ponting highlighted Arshdeep’s ability to excel with both the new ball and in the death overs, qualities that Bumrah’s absence will be felt in. “Arshdeep provides a similar skill set to Bumrah with the new ball and in the death overs,” Ponting noted. While Rana has potential, Ponting feels his death bowling skills aren’t as refined as Arshdeep’s.
Ponting also emphasized the importance of having a left-arm fast bowler, particularly in big tournaments with a predominance of right-handed batters. Arshdeep’s left-arm variation could prove crucial in this regard.
Looking ahead, Ponting expressed confidence in India’s form, noting the return to form of key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, especially in the lead-up series against England. “Rohit, Virat—your experienced players—need to stand up in the big moments,” he said, adding that, aside from Bumrah’s injury, India’s preparations for the Champions Trophy were on track.
