Government to All-Party Meet: “Giving Sheikh Hasina Time and Space to Decide Her Future”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced on Tuesday that the Indian government is closely monitoring the political situation in Bangladesh following the sudden resignation and departure of Sheikh Hasina. Her arrival in India is seen as a courtesy move, allowing her to settle, recover, and discuss her future plans.

During an all-party meeting, Jaishankar emphasized the need to give Hasina space and time, noting her arrival on short notice. “We want to give her space and time. She has come at short notice,” he stated, adding that no decision has been made regarding her next destination.

The opposition, led by Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, expressed unanimous support for the government’s stance. Gandhi inquired about the circumstances leading to Hasina’s resignation and India’s plans to protect its interests. Government sources indicated that detailed information could not be disclosed publicly, and the opposition assured cooperation.

Top government officials revealed that Hasina would stay in India for the next few days pending a security review. After being forced to leave Dhaka, India facilitated her safe passage, and she landed at the Hindon airbase near Delhi, where she has access to long-term facilities for high-level dignitaries.

Highly placed sources mentioned that Hasina is uncertain about her next move. While the UK has not been forthcoming with asylum, she is considering options in Scandinavian and other European countries.

As the situation unfolds, Hasina remains free to decide her next steps, with India providing the necessary support and space for her to plan her future.
