Foreign Hand in Bangladesh? Jaishankar to Rahul: ‘Pakistani Diplomat Changed His Profile Pic, But…’

During an all-party meeting convened by the Centre to discuss the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the need for cautious assessment regarding potential foreign involvement in the turmoil. Responding to concerns raised by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Jaishankar remarked, “It is too early to rule in or rule out anything, but a Pakistani diplomat did change his social media profile picture to support the agitation in Bangladesh.” He assured the leaders that the Centre is vigilantly monitoring all possible scenarios.

Jaishankar provided a detailed briefing on the developments in Bangladesh, the current state of affairs, and the actions taken by the Indian government. He highlighted that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had moved to India, and the Indian government is providing her the necessary time to decide her future course of action.

Taking to social media platform X, Jaishankar stated, “Briefed an All-Party meeting in Parliament today about the ongoing developments in Bangladesh. Appreciate the unanimous support and understanding that was extended.”

During the meeting, the External Affairs Minister informed the leaders that the Indian government is in continuous communication with the Bangladesh Army. He stressed that the situation remains fluid and assured that the government would take appropriate actions as needed. Sources revealed that the leaders were also briefed about the presence of approximately 20,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, with 8,000 already having returned. The Indian government remains in contact with its nationals, and the High Commission in Bangladesh continues its operations.

The meeting also underscored the importance of protecting minorities amidst the unrest. When questioned by Rahul Gandhi about India’s long-term and short-term strategies, the government reiterated that the situation is evolving and requires ongoing analysis.

Bangladesh is currently experiencing significant political instability following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amid widespread protests. Initially sparked by students demanding an end to the government job quota system, these protests have escalated into broader anti-government demonstrations. In response, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka have proposed an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus to navigate the country through its challenges.

Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on Monday evening after resigning from her post. It remains uncertain whether she will stay in Delhi or relocate to another destination.
