Farmers To Protest In Punjab Against Measures To Curb AQI

Today, Punjab is witnessing a significant farmers’ protest amid ongoing efforts to control air quality index (AQI) levels in the region. The protest, organized by various farmers’ unions, underscores the ongoing tensions between agricultural practices and environmental regulations aimed at reducing pollution.

Farmers are expressing their discontent over measures that they believe unfairly target their activities, particularly stubble burning, which is often cited as a major contributor to poor air quality. They argue that the lack of alternative solutions and support from the government makes it challenging for them to transition to more sustainable farming methods.

“Today we will stage a road blockade at four places, which will begin at 1 pm,” Surjeet Singh Phul, Chairman of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Krantikari) Punjab, stated. The “chakka jam” will be staged at one location each in Moga, Sangrur, Batala and Phagwara.

Many farmers feel that the regulations imposed to combat rising pollution levels do not adequately consider their economic realities or the seasonal nature of their work.

As air quality deteriorates, particularly in the northern states during winter months, authorities have been implementing stricter regulations to curb pollution. Except, Himachal and Uttarakhand, the entire north India is faced with the challenge to breathe contaminated air due to rising pollution.
