Houthi Attacks in Red Sea Jeopardise India’s Interests: S Jaishankar

In a recent escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have targeted ships in the Red Sea, including those owned by Israel or heading to Israeli ports. The situation has led to a direct confrontation with the US, as a cargo ship was destroyed by the Houthis in the Gulf of Aden on Monday.

The Red Sea, a vital maritime route connecting the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, has witnessed a series of attacks. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed concern, stating that piracy and missile strikes pose distinct challenges. He emphasized the impact on India’s energy and economic interests and called for a speedy resolution.

Several shipping lines are rerouting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope to reach Europe due to the Houthi attacks. The Greek-owned bulk carrier Zograflia from Vietnam to Israel was the latest target on January 17.

During an official visit to Iran, Jaishankar met with President Ebrahim Raisi on January 16 to discuss the implementation of bilateral agreements, including the Chabahar Port Development Plan. Raisi raised concerns about Israel’s counteroffensive in Gaza, urging India to play a role in ending bombings and addressing Palestinian rights.

British oil giant Shell announced the indefinite suspension of all shipments through the Red Sea, and the US and British forces conducted air strikes in Yemen in retaliation for Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping. The Houthis consider their actions a response to Israel’s offensive in Gaza, further complicating the regional dynamics.
