Elon Musk Supports India’s Call for UN Security Council Reform, Labels Exclusion as Absurd

In a social media post on his platform, X, entrepreneur Elon Musk expressed strong support for India’s demand for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Musk labeled the current exclusion of India, despite being the world’s most populous country, as “absurd” and called for a revision of UN bodies.

Musk highlighted the reluctance of those holding excessive power to relinquish it, stating, “At some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies. Problem is that those with excess power don’t want to give it up.” He also emphasized the need for collective representation, suggesting that Africa should also have a permanent seat on the UNSC.

The billionaire’s remarks were prompted by a post from venture capitalist and author Michael Eisenberg, responding to a call for UN body revisions by UN Chief Antonio Guterres. Guterres had urged reforms to better reflect the current global realities.

India has long advocated for reforms in the UNSC, with Union Minister for External Affairs, S Jaishankar, actively pushing for changes on the global stage. Jaishankar has criticized the current structure of the UNSC, describing it as an “old club” unwilling to admit new members or question its practices.

In December 2023, Jaishankar emphasized the need for reforms, warning that if the UN does not undergo necessary changes, nations may seek alternative solutions. He pointed out the exclusion of the African Union, Latin American countries, and India, questioning the resistance to including these regions in key decision-making bodies.
