Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is set to join US President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, made headlines on Friday after calling German Chancellor Olaf Scholz an “incompetent fool” and urging him to resign following a deadly incident at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany. A car rammed into a crowd at the market, resulting in the deaths of two people, including a toddler, and leaving more than 60 others injured. The driver, identified as Saudi national Taleb A., was arrested at the scene.
Earlier in the day, Musk also weighed in on Germany’s political scene, endorsing the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has been gaining traction in the country’s election campaign. “Only the AfD can save Germany,” Musk wrote on his social media platform, X. This comment echoes Musk’s earlier support for the AfD, which he praised last year while criticizing Germany’s handling of illegal immigration.
The AfD is currently in second place in German opinion polls and could potentially block both the center-right and center-left parties from forming a majority in the upcoming elections. Despite this, Germany’s mainstream parties have firmly pledged to exclude the AfD from any coalition government. The country is set to hold elections on February 23 following the collapse of Chancellor Scholz’s center-left coalition government.
Musk, the world’s richest person, has previously expressed support for anti-immigration parties across Europe, further aligning himself with the AfD’s views. In response to Musk’s comments, the German government acknowledged his remarks but did not provide additional commentary during its regular press briefing.
