Over the eastern and southern peninsulas of India, a severe heatwave is expected to pass soon. According to a forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southern states might have to wait another day while the eastern region might receive relief by today.
According to the weather office, these areas are also likely to see a wet spell until May 10 along with thunderstorms and strong winds.
Since last month, these two regions have been experiencing extreme heatwaves with daily highs above 40 degrees. Kolkata recorded 43 degrees on the final day of April, the highest temperature in 50 years.
A new heatwave spell is predicted to cross western India over the next five days, affecting Gujarat, Rajasthan, and western Madhya Pradesh, while the East and South experience some respite.
Rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to persist into tomorrow in the Northeast.
It has been raining heavily in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills area of Meghalaya since yesterday. The rains had an impact on over 400 people and damaged several houses. The IMD says it will go on for an additional 48 hours.
