Earthquake With 6.9 Intensity Rocks Southwestern Japan

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck southwestern Japan on Monday, prompting tsunami advisories and public warnings to avoid coastal areas. The advisories were later lifted.

There were no immediate reports of significant damage, though some coastal residents were evacuated as a precaution. In Kyushu, a man sustained minor injuries after falling down stairs, according to NHK TV. Trains were halted at Miyazaki Station, leaving passengers stranded. NHK also reported that a tsunami, initially estimated to reach 1 meter, made landfall within 30 minutes of the quake, though waters at Miyazaki Port rose only 20 centimeters.

The tsunami advisories, issued for Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu and Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku, were called off just before midnight. Authorities urged residents to stay clear of water bodies, including rivers, and to remain alert for landslides and falling objects inside homes.

Shigeki Aoki, an official from Japan’s Meteorological Agency, cautioned that aftershocks could occur over the next week, with the highest likelihood in the next two to three days. The earthquake, which occurred at 9:19 p.m., was centered 30 kilometers deep and affected a wide area in Kyushu, the agency reported.

Despite the quake’s strength, NHK TV footage showed well-lit streets and moving traffic, indicating that power supply remained intact. Monitoring posts for nearby nuclear plants reported no issues.

Meteorological agency experts convened late Monday to assess whether the quake was connected to the Nankai Trough, a region known for periodic major earthquakes. However, they decided against implementing extraordinary measures at this time.

The Nankai Trough region has a history of devastating quakes, including a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in August last year and a deadly 1946 quake off Shikoku that claimed more than 1,300 lives. Japan’s location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” makes it highly susceptible to frequent seismic activity.
