EAM Jaishankar Expresses ‘Big Concern’ Over Deaths of Indian Students in the US

In a press briefing on Monday, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the growing concern over the deaths and violent attacks on Indian students in the United States. While acknowledging the tragic incidents, Jaishankar emphasized that they appeared to be unconnected and varied in nature.

“Some were murdered over personal issues whereas others were victims to accidents,” stated Jaishankar. He reassured that Indian embassies and consulates have thoroughly investigated each case, finding no underlying connection between them.

Jaishankar highlighted the government’s proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of Indian students abroad. He mentioned that embassies have been directed to maintain close communication with students, providing guidance on staying safe, especially in high-risk areas of cities.

“With around 11-12 lakh Indian students residing abroad, student welfare remains a top priority for us,” Jaishankar affirmed, adding, “Every Indian going out has Modi’s guarantee.”

The minister’s remarks come in the wake of recent incidents, including the death of a 25-year-old student from Hyderabad in Ohio’s Cleveland and the killing of a 20-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh in Boston. The Ministry of External Affairs has intensified its outreach efforts, offering assistance to affected families and emphasizing student safety.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal underscored the importance of strengthening student outreach programs, particularly in light of the recent tragedies. “Since January, there are some ten-odd students who have passed away,” Jaiswal stated, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and support for Indian students in the US.
