Delhi Polls: What S Jaishankar Feels Let Down About National Capital?

The high-energy campaign for the Delhi Assembly elections is nearing its conclusion. Voting will take place on February 5, with results to be announced on February 8. As the campaign winds down, both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are pulling out all the stops to sway voters.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar took a strong swipe at the AAP-led Delhi government, accusing it of failing to provide essential services to the city’s residents. He expressed his embarrassment about telling the world that people in the national capital are deprived of basic amenities under central government schemes. “Whenever I visit foreign countries, I hide one thing from the world. I feel ashamed to admit abroad that people living in the national capital do not have access to houses, gas cylinders, piped water under the Jal Jeevan Mission, or the benefits of Ayushman Bharat,” Jaishankar remarked. He added that Delhi had been “left behind” in the last decade and urged voters to consider a change in government when they cast their ballots on February 5.

During an interaction with the South Indian community in Delhi, Jaishankar also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He said, “Ever since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, the world’s perception of India has changed significantly. Even in a global economic downturn, we’re maintaining a 6-7% growth rate.”

On the other hand, AAP MP Sanjay Singh expressed confidence that his party would secure over 60 seats in the 70-seat Delhi Assembly. Speaking to the media, Singh stated, “AAP will win more than 60 seats, and an Arvind Kejriwal-led government will be formed in Delhi with an absolute majority.”
