Cotton Candy Banned In Puducherry, Lt Governor Announces In Video Message

Puducherry has banned the sale of cotton candy after it was found that a hazardous chemical was used in its manufacturing.

Tamilisai Soundararajan, the lieutenant governor of Puducherry, declared the ban in a video on Thursday. The governor shared the video on her official Instagram page and asked people to avoid purchasing cotton candy for kids because of the harmful chemicals it contains.

In the video, Tamilsai Soundararajan disclosed that toxic substance rhodamine-B was discovered by food safety officials. “It has been found that a toxic substance named ‘Rhodamine B’ is being used in the cotton candies that are consumed by children and others in Puducherry,” the governor stated in the appeal.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH.gov), rhodamine B, also known as RhB, is a chemical compound that is used as a dye. According to its official page, RhB frequently enters the body through food and stresses cells and tissues through oxidative stress. In addition, consuming food containing rhodamine B over an extended period of time may cause serious health issues like cancer or liver dysfunction.Furthermore, acute poisoning occurs when a human body is exposed to high concentrations for a brief period of time.
