Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud recently shared how his daughters’ influence led him to adopt a vegan and cruelty-free lifestyle. Speaking at the launch of the Digital Law Reports of the Delhi High Court and the inauguration of a Sagar Ratna outlet run by neuro-diverse individuals, CJI Chandrachud revealed the personal inspiration behind his lifestyle change.
“My two daughters – Priyanka and Mahi – who are specially-abled, continue to inspire me in everything I do. I have adopted a vegan lifestyle recently because they expressed a desire for a cruelty-free existence,” the Chief Justice stated. He noted that his commitment extends beyond dietary choices, including avoiding silk and leather products, a practice supported by his wife as well.
CJI Chandrachud adopted Priyanka and Mahi in 2015 while serving as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. The decision was driven by the lack of adequate educational facilities in their village in Uttarakhand. To ensure their education, he arranged for their schooling at his home in Allahabad, and later, as he moved to Delhi, they attended Tamanna School and subsequently, Sanskriti School.
Reflecting on the impact of his daughters, CJI Chandrachud emphasized, “Though they have special needs, their minds are exceptionally sharp. We never anticipated that these girls would enter our lives, but they have profoundly reshaped our world in countless ways.”
