China Threatens US With Trade War, Amid Row Over Escalating Tariff

Tensions between China and the United States have reached a boiling point, with Beijing issuing a stern warning to Washington, declaring its readiness to “fight till the end” if the U.S. continues to escalate trade hostilities. The confrontation is fueled by President Donald Trump’s vow to impose reciprocal tariffs on China, which Beijing views as a retaliatory move under the guise of the fentanyl crisis. In a pointed statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry accused the U.S. of using fentanyl as a “flimsy excuse” to justify further tariff hikes on Chinese imports.

Trump’s administration has frequently blamed China for not doing enough to curb the export of chemicals used in the illicit production of fentanyl, a drug at the center of America’s opioid overdose epidemic. However, China countered by claiming the U.S. is shifting blame for its own domestic issues and resorting to economic bullying, including tariff increases, to apply pressure on China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stressed that such intimidation tactics would have no effect, asserting that Beijing would not be swayed by coercion or threats.

China’s tough rhetoric comes as the Trump administration continues its aggressive tariff strategy. Following Trump’s announcement of reciprocal tariffs during his first address to Congress, Washington has already doubled tariffs on Chinese imports to 20%, marking the second round of tariffs between the two economic giants since February. This escalation has raised concerns about the potential for a full-blown trade war.

In response, China has imposed its own retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural products, including wheat, corn, and cotton, ranging from 10% to 15%. Additionally, Beijing has placed 25 American companies under export and investment restrictions, citing national security concerns.

As both nations dig in their heels, the future of trade relations remains uncertain. While the U.S. aims to hold China accountable for its role in the fentanyl crisis, China insists it is being unfairly targeted and that a cooperative, equal partnership is needed to address the issue. With no resolution in sight, the escalating tariff war risks further destabilizing global markets, raising questions about the long-term economic fallout and the broader geopolitical implications.
