BRS Leader K Kavitha Sent to 14-Day Judicial Custody in Delhi Excise Policy Scam Case

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court, on Tuesday, ordered Bharat Rashtriya Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha to 14-day judicial custody in connection to the Delhi excise policy scam case. Kavitha, who was produced before the court at the end of her custody remand, faced the decision from Special Judge Kaveri Baweja.

The order for judicial custody came after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) refrained from seeking an extension of Kavitha’s custodial interrogation. During the proceedings, Kavitha’s advocate Nitesh Rana appealed for interim bail citing her minor son’s exams. However, the ED’s counsel opposed the bail request, highlighting the stringent provisions under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for both interim and regular bail.

The court scheduled a hearing for Kavitha’s interim bail plea on April 1. Additionally, Kavitha’s counsel sought permission to physically inspect the documents submitted by the agency under provisions of the PMLA.

The federal probe agency informed the court that during her remand period, Kavitha’s statement was recorded, she was interrogated, and confronted with various individuals and digital records. The ED has alleged Kavitha, daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, of being a key member of the ‘South Group,’ accused of paying kickbacks of Rs 100 crore to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in exchange for a significant share of liquor licenses in Delhi.

Before entering the courtroom, Kavitha asserted, “This is not a money laundering case but a political laundering case. It is a fabricated and false case. We will come out clean.”

Earlier, the ED raided the residences of Kavitha’s nephew Meka Sri Sharan Rao and sister-in-law Akila. Reports suggest that the ED may also arrest some of Kavitha’s family members.

Previously, the court had directed that Kavitha’s ED custody should adhere to the same terms and conditions, including interrogation at a location with CCTV cameras and preserving the footage.
