In a significant demonstration against the Mamata Banerjee government, the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Sukanta Majumdar, organized a massive protest on Monday in Barrackpore. The focal point of the protest was the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, prompting clashes between BJP workers and the police.
The situation escalated when Sukanta Majumdar attempted to gherao the Barrackpur Commissioner’s office. Protesting BJP workers allegedly broke through two barricades, leading to instances of stone-pelting. In response, police deployed water cannons and resorted to a lathi charge to control the crowd. The situation, however, is now reported to be under control.
Speaking to reporters, Sukanta Majumdar criticized the West Bengal police, referring to them as ‘Taliban Police’ operating under Mamata Banerjee’s directives. He claimed that during the protest outside the CP office, police used water cannons, tear gas, and lathi-charged the demonstrators, even accusing them of pelting stones.
“We did a protest outside the CP office. Police used water cannons and tear gas. They lathi-charged and even pelted stones,” Majumdar said. He further expressed concern over the alleged lathi-charge on women protestors and named police officer Ashish Maurya, stating their intention to take legal action against him.
As tensions flared, BJP workers, along with Sukanta Majumdar, staged a dharna (sit-in protest) in front of Titagarh Thana in Barrackpur. The move came in response to some workers being arrested by the police and others reportedly being “mercilessly” beaten. Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the legislative assembly, claimed that at least six workers were hospitalized due to the clashes.
