The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing attack on Congress MP Randeep Surjewala for what they termed as a “vile sexist comment” directed towards BJP MP Hema Malini. Surjewala’s remark has sparked a heated exchange between the two political parties, with the BJP accusing the Congress of displaying misogynistic tendencies.
Amit Malviya, the head of BJP’s IT cell, took to social media platform X to condemn Surjewala’s comment, highlighting its derogatory nature not only towards Hema Malini but towards women in general. Malviya quoted Surjewala as questioning the purpose of becoming an MLA or MP, insinuating that they are made to comply rather than to serve, using a demeaning analogy involving Hema Malini.
Malviya further criticized Surjewala’s alleged disrespect towards women, claiming it to be a reflection of the Congress party’s attitude towards women in power. He pointed out another instance of derogatory remarks made by a Congress colleague towards a BJP woman leader, denouncing what he perceives as a pattern of disrespect towards women within the Congress ranks.
Adding fuel to the fire, BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, weighed in on the controversy, accusing the Congress of spreading hatred instead of love. Ranaut took a swipe at the Congress leadership, accusing them of deteriorating their character with each passing day due to frustration over impending defeat.
Echoing similar sentiments, BJP’s national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla condemned the Congress party for consistently insulting womanpower. Poonawalla described Surjewala’s comment as misogynistic and sexist, emphasizing that disrespect towards women has become synonymous with the Congress party’s identity.
In response, Surjewala defended himself, claiming that the BJP selectively presented parts of his speech to twist its meaning. He posted the full video of his speech, clarifying that his intention was not to insult Hema Malini but to emphasize accountability to the public.
Hema Malini herself responded to the controversy, brushing off the criticism from the opposition as expected behavior. She praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his respect towards women and urged the Congress to learn from his example.
