Ujjwal Nikam has been appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor for the Badlapur sexual assault case, which will be expedited through a fast-track court. This high-profile case involves the sexual abuse of two girls by a sweeper at a kindergarten in Badlapur, located in Maharashtra’s Thane district. The incident has led to widespread protests in the city, including demonstrations that have blocked trains at the Badlapur railway station.
In response to the gravity of the situation, the Maharashtra government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate the abuse. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has pledged a swift and thorough investigation, announcing via Twitter that the case will be handled by a fast-track court with Ujjwal Nikam appointed as the special public prosecutor.
Nikam, who previously contested the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket but lost to Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad, has been reappointed as Special Public Prosecutor for his ongoing cases. Nikam’s distinguished career began in 1979, and he gained notable prominence as the special public prosecutor in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. He has since been involved in several high-profile cases demanding justice, including the Shakti Mills gangrape case and the Kopardi rape and murder case.
