Army, police clash in Kupwara police station: 3 TA Lt Colonels booked

According to an FIR, three army lieutenant colonels and thirteen other people have been charged with attempted murder and dacoity for their alleged roles in a violent attack on the Kupwara police station.

It is believed that the questioning of a Territorial Army jawan by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in relation to an alleged drug case set off the incident on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.

A video showed a group of senior Indian Army officials and armed and uniformed members of the 160 Territorial Army storming the police station.

The Indian Army receives support services from the Territorial Army, a volunteer military reserve, which is made up of part-timers.

The armed group, led by lieutenant colonels Ankit Sood, Rajiv Chauhan, and Nikhil, allegedly forced their way into the police station’s grounds. This is according to the police report. It said that they then launched a vicious attack on the police officers who were present, hitting them with sticks and rifle butts and kicking them without cause.

According to the FIR, the situation worsened when army personnel brandished their weapons, took cell phones away from hurt police officers, and even kidnapped a police constable before leaving the scene.
