Telugu actor Allu Arjun on Tuesday left his Hyderabad residence to appear for questioning by the police in connection with the tragic death of a 35-year-old woman in a stampede during the premiere of his film Pushpa 2: The Rise earlier this month.
There was heavy security outside Arjun’s home, with police barricading the area to prevent a repeat of an incident on Sunday when a group of individuals, claiming to be students of Osmania University, forcibly entered the actor’s residence and vandalized property. They had demanded Rs 1 crore as compensation for the victim’s family, throwing tomatoes and breaking flower pots in the process. Police arrested six people in connection with this disturbance, but all were granted bail by a Hyderabad court on Monday.
The actor was issued a notice to appear before the police on Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation into the stampede, which took place on December 4 during a screening of Pushpa 2 at the Sandhya Theatre. Arjun was scheduled to appear at 11 am, as the police probe continues. The actor had previously stated that he would fully cooperate with the investigation.
The stampede occurred when Arjun visited the theatre during the film’s screening, and thousands of fans rushed to catch a glimpse of the actor. The tragic incident resulted in the death of Revathi, while her eight-year-old son was injured and hospitalized.
Following the stampede, the police filed a case against Arjun, his security team, and the theatre management under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Arjun was arrested on December 13, but later that day, he was granted four weeks of interim bail by the Telangana High Court and was released from prison on December 14.
In response to the tragedy, Arjun announced a financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for the victim’s family, while the producers of Pushpa 2 provided Rs 50 lakh in aid.
