Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, was detained by the Enforcement Directorate the day after he was accused of corruption in the issuance of liquor licenses. His wife, Sunita Kejriwal, called the detention a “betrayal of the people of Delhi”.
“Your Chief Minister has consistently supported you. His life is devoted to serving the nation, both inside and outside the country. Everyone is aware of everything,” she wrote on X.
Mr. Kejriwal, who formed the Aam Aadmi Party ten years ago on the grounds of combating corruption, was held overnight by the Enforcement Directorate, or ED. As “a desperate attempt to malign the image” of Mr. Kejriwal, his party has rejected the action.
Shortly after the Delhi High Court denied Mr. Kejriwal any immunity from coercive action in the money laundering case involving excise policies, the Enforcement Directorate took action.
Previously, as he was escorted by law enforcement into a courtroom, he declared, “My life is dedicated to the country, whether I am inside or outside.” Regarding Mr. Kejriwal’s ability to be released from custody, the court has deferred its decision.
Hundreds of AAP employees protested the Enforcement Directorate’s decision in the streets after his arrest.
His political party, the AAP, is adamant that he will remain in jail and serve as Delhi’s chief minister. On the other hand, sources within the prison have stated that they would follow the jail manual.
Atishi Marlena Singh, the minister of education for Delhi, stated that Mr. Kejriwal had not quit from his position. “We made it clear from the beginning that if needed, Arvind Kejriwal will run the government from jail,” she stated to reporters.
In an attempt to obtain ten days of custody, the Enforcement Directorate claimed today in trial court that Mr. Kejrwal was the “kingpin” of the purported Delhi liquor policy scam.
The 55-year-old had earlier disregarded nine summonses from the central money laundering investigation agency. Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, and Vijay Nair, three of his senior party colleagues, are currently detained pending trial in connection with the same case.
