In a significant development, Congress MLA Baba Siddique, representing the esteemed Bandra area in Mumbai, announced his resignation from the Congress party on Thursday. Siddique, a prominent minority figure within the Mumbai Congress, had also served as a minister during the Congress-NCP coalition’s tenure in power.
Expressing his decision on social media platform X, Siddique stated, “I joined the Indian National Congress party as a young teenager and it has been a significant journey lasting 48 years. Today I resign from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress Party with immediate effect.” While Siddique expressed gratitude towards those who had accompanied him on his political journey, he hinted at leaving certain matters unspoken.
Reports suggest that Siddique is likely to join the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). This move coincides with the recent recognition by the Election Commission of India of the Ajit Pawar faction as the legitimate National Congress Party (NCP).
This departure from the Congress comes in the wake of another notable resignation earlier in January, when Congress leader Milind Deora terminated his family’s longstanding 55-year association with the grand old party. Speaking to the media about his decision to step down from the Congress, Deora had emphasized his commitment to the path of development.
