Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the Indian cricket team’s performance in Australia, reports suggest that skipper Rohit Sharma is set to be rested for the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney. The match, starting Friday, is crucial for India as they aim to level the series and retain the prestigious trophy.
According to The Indian Express, Rohit Sharma has opted out of the final Test, citing personal reasons. He reportedly informed head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who agreed to the decision. In Rohit’s absence, ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah is expected to take on the captaincy duties.
The report further revealed that coach Gambhir held a long and intense conversation with Bumrah during fielding drills on the eve of the Test. Meanwhile, Rohit participated briefly in net practice but skipped routine slip-catching drills and was the last to join the practice session.
If Rohit sits out, Shubman Gill is likely to return to the playing XI and bat at number three. KL Rahul will reclaim the opening slot alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. Additionally, Prasidh Krishna is set to replace the injured Akash Deep, who was ruled out of the series finale on Thursday.
Former cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Madan Lal has welcomed the decision to rest Rohit Sharma. Speaking to CNN-News18, Lal said, “It’s a very good decision taken by the team management. I think the captain was also a part of this decision. Sometimes, if you are not in form, it is better to be rested.”
Earlier, Gambhir remained non-committal about Rohit’s inclusion in the playing XI. Addressing the media on Thursday, he said, “We will look at the wicket and announce the playing XI tomorrow. Everything is fine with Rohit. The head coach is here, and that should be good enough.”
India will be hoping to make a strong comeback under Bumrah’s leadership to end the series on a high note. All eyes will be on the playing XI announcement and how the team adapts to the changes in this crucial decider.
